MD: Utility proposes steep hike in fixed monthly charges

Choptank Electric Cooperative has filed a rate case application with the Maryland Public Service Commission (Case No. 9368) that is critical of net metering and distributed generation, and which includes a sharp increase in the utility’s fixed monthly charge for most customer classes. For residential customers, the Choptank Electric Cooperative has proposed raising its fixed monthly charge by 70% (from $10 to $17) and indicated that it would support an increase of $19.54, raising the monthly fixed charge to $29.54. The utility also indicated that it will consider demand-based charges for all customer classes in the future.

Choptank Electric Cooperative provides electricity to 52,400 customers in parts of all nine counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
