EV: States, utilities rev up generous EV incentives

Share

States and utilities continue to bend over backwards to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) in their jurisdictions and service territories. Many currently offer extremely generous financial incentives, on top of a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

In New Jersey, PSEG and JCP&L are currently offering customers a $10,000 discount on the purchase of a 2017 Nissan LEAF. The same discount is currently available to customers of PSEG Long Island, in New York; Potomac Edison, in Maryland; and Rocky Mountain Power, in Utah.

In Maryland, the Maryland Energy Administration recently made available FY 2018 funds for EV supply equipment (EVSE) rebates are now available. The EVSE Rebate Program 2.0 was established pursuant to the Clean Cars Act of 2017.

In Delaware, the Division of Energy & Climate is encouraging businesses, non-profit organizations, and local governments to take advantage of the Delaware Workplace Charging Program, which offers participants rebates and technical guidance for the installation of EV-charging stations. Incentives cover 75% of the cost of charging equipment, with a maximum rebate of $5,000.

In Ohio, in a regulatory case addressing AEP’s proposed Electric Security Plan, a settlement has been filed that would establish an EV-charging station demonstration project. Up to $9.5 million in rebates would be available under the program, with 10% of the charging stations located in low-income areas. Rebate levels would vary by the type of charging station, the availability of the charging station to the general public, and whether the owner is a public or private entity. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has not approved the settlement yet.

In June, EQ Research published a longer article describing efforts by states and utilities to accelerate the deployment of EVs and EVSE in their jurisdictions and service territories thus far in 2017.
